I am wanting to be an officer in the Military. Does anyone know if PCOS disqualifies you?
And Can there be a forum for college girls/late twenties? I am not a a mommy-to-be, mommy, 40+, and or teen. I feel that one should be started for that age bracket. |

vw, I'm not quite sure on if it would disqualify you. You would have to talk to a recruiter about that. My husband is enlisted in the Navy and he's not sure either. Do you take met regularly? I'm more leaning towards them still letting you join.
You could also take a look at the general discussion boards for information and meeting people like yourself. |

I talked to my friend who is a Marine recruiter. He said that " I finally got a hold of the right person. It most likely won't keep her out depending on the severity of the cyst. It will, however, be a medical of waiver that would have to go through the Department of Defense Bureau of Medicine. I hope that helps." Of course I told him it was a friend. I didn't want my entire small town to know I have this. But, that relieved me so much. I just started met on Thursday. It makes me nauseous. I am currently only taking 500 mg once a day. The doctor said that he wants me to start out with that. He said that I might have to up my dosage, but he won't make me until he sees me in 2 months.
I am currently enrolled in a Masters program, and won't be finished till about next December or May of 2011. I am working on my application to join the Navy as an officer. I had been trying to get physically fit to join the military the past 4 months, and I didn't want all my hard work/hopes to be for nothing. I know that my hard work of working out wouldn't be for nothing because it is important to be healthy. I guess it is just one of those things. But thank you for checking with your hubby. I really appreciate it ![]() |

I've been interested in joining the military for some time now and have spoken to various recruiters. None of the recruiters have been able to give me a definite yes or no. (PCOS is still highly misunderstood.) However after an extensive search online, I was able to find a detailed Air Force manual for enlisted and those joining as officers. The manual discussed various medical conditions, the accepted ranges and if said conditions allowed a medical waiver. Sadly. PCOS is a PDQ (permanently disqualified) condition. No waiver is allowed. I can only imagine if PCOS is a PDQ in the Air Force, that it would also apply to other branches.
I have since deleted the manual from my PC and given up my military dreams. I am still going to try to obtain a job with the military as a civilian. However back to the manual, do an internet search for it (I used Google and put in many hours.) I'm sure you'll be able to find it. PS: Now that I've been thinking back on the manual... maybe it wasn't from the Air Force. I downloaded so many different documents in search of an answer. If you can't find anything from the Air Force, try MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). Last edited by dark-light; 12-09-2009 at 08:41 PM. Reason: Additional Manual Information |

The AirForce is a lot more strict than the other branches. I honestly can't imagine that PCOS would disqualify you from all of them. And there is pretty much a waiver for anything. I know there are people in the military who admit to doing drugs in the past and get a waiver for that. It's not a condition that will prevent you from being able to do any work or physical activity. I would still go through the motions and see what happens if you're really interested.

I recently came across this thread and wanted to add something to it. My husband is in the Marines and one of the girls in his shop I -believe- has PCOS or something similar (ie cysts, ect). Now that is enlisted side, but I couldn't see why they wouldn't allow you into the military with the condition. I also believe that each branch has its own set of restrictions and requirements. I've been told that the Army is generally the "easiest" to get into with regard to medical conditions that can be waved.
I hope you find your answers and hope that you can reach this goal of yours. Even if you are unsure as to the answer, I would still try to get in if that is the path you wish to take. The worst they can tell you is no. And although that may not be the happiest answer or day for you, if you don't actually try, you will never know. Good luck! |

Hey, I also wanted to join the military but I was told that PCOS is a PDQ and I heard of this girl who joined and was PDQ when she went to MEPS(??). It is so sad that this gets you DQ. If you find more information please share. Thanks.
