Default New Member--Frustrated

My name is Lisa. I'm 23 and I'm a new member.

I just found today that I have PCOS. It's not much of a surprise because both my of sisters have it and my mom had it.

I'm a little frustrated. I'm at my all time highest weight and miserable. My BMI is in the obese range. I try to lose weight, but it takes forever to lose like five pounds. My oldest sister who has PCOS can lose weight pretty quick and is in a normal weight range. My second oldest sister is in the same boat as I am.
My sugar levels were 11 pts away from being in the pre-diabetic range. A big reality check to me. Has anyone tried the low-glycemic index diet? Does it work? Does anyone have any tips that have helped them. I need to work on getting my sugar levels down. I'm 23 and not in the mood to deal with anything that deals with diabetes.

Thx!

I have not tried that diet.

What works for me is a food journal with regular excercise. A good way to start out is to just track what you eat and not change anything for a few days. After every meal write down what you eat, the calories, carbs, fat, protein... just to see where you are. Once you know that, you know what you need to change to meet your goals.

Everyday I walk at least a half mile (about 6000 steps = 1 mile for me, I use a pedometer) but every other day I try to walk two miles (one at the least). Every other day I do simple strength training exercises, like wall push-ups, lunges, and things like that. You don't need machines or weights or special cookbooks, all you need is willpower and motivation.

It's important to set small achievable goals, like lose 10 pounds in 3 months. Eat between 1200 and 1600 calories a day. Try one new excercise a week. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.

I use SparkPeople (www.sparkpeople.com it's free and that's awesome! I'm AbstractBug there too, if you join, look me up) and My Weight Loss Coach for the Nintendo DS (retail about $30, I got it on Amazon for $8). You can buy a pedometer for as little as $5 - my doctor told me to take 10,000 steps a day (that's more than twice what the "average American" takes every day) as a way to be active.

I'm 22 and just diagnosed, too. Diabetes runs in my family, and I'm at risk for that too.
I have not tried glycemic index diet. What works for me is a food journal and regular exercise.

Using a food journal isn't hard. For the first few days don't worry about changing the way you eat, just keep track of EVERYTHING you eat and drink. Track more than just what the food is, but also what it has in it - the calories, carbs, protein, fat, vitamins, so you can see how much and what you regularly eat. After that set an achievable goal, like 1200-1600 calories, do 1 hour of cardio exercise every other day, drink 8 glasses of water every day, eat 1 fruit a day, eat 2 vegetables a day... simple things like that.

I walk two miles every other day, a half mile every day I'm not walking two. On the half mile day I do strength training exercises like lunges and wall push-ups. You don't need weights or machines to exercise, just will power and motivation.

I use SparkPeople and My Weight Loss Coach for the Nintendo DS. (www.sparkpeople.com it's free, and that's awesome, my username there is also AbstractBug) (Weight Loss Coach is about $30 but I got it on Amazon for $8)

Lots of people really like the Wii and Wii Fit (my brother thinks it's great).

I hope you can find something that works for you, work hard!

Hi girls. I'm not sure if this helps. I don't have this problem but I truly feel for you. My mom had a hysterectomy a few yrs ago and she ended up gaining over 60 lbs in one yr. I know you must be so frustrated not losing the weight since she is having such a hard time. The only thing she is trying now that has been working is eating very few calories. She never ate a lot before...in fact, she'd skip meals which is so bad for you. She works a lot and stresses a lot and I know for sure that if you stress a lot in won't work. I want you guys to know that it's not because you're being lazy or not trying....especially with PCOS, it's a hormone thing and you don't really have much control over it. I did hear that there are things that drs can prescribe that will help you lose weight. If you DO have diabetes there is a drug...starts w/ a B and I'm going blank now...hmm..but anyways...it manages your diabetes and helps you lose weight...might want to ask your dr? Good luck, and remember....don't waste your life being unhappy...you deserve happiness and it will happen.

Hi Lisa,
Welcome to here! I see that you live in Indy, as do I. To eat healthier, I go to Whole Foods up on 86th and get their free magazines and then make some of the receipes they have in there. I know that they are healthier and it's all organic foods, so I'm not getting a lot of the processed sugars found in pre-made meals. I haven't done a whole lot since I was dx but am trying now to eat healthier and exercise more. My BMI is in the obeses range as well. I think it's really important to throw exercise into your routine and not just cardio but also weights as the added muscle will boost your metabolism. Look around on here as there are a lot of really good suggestions on eating, especially with the GI plan. Welcome!

Default Low Glycemic Index Approach Not That Bad

Hi there,

I have tried the LGI approach and it does work. I, too, had some trouble losing the weight and I had always exercised and ate healthy. This approach is more about a lifestyle instead of a "diet." You don't feel hungry. It's been an approach that is easy to adopt to a busy lifestyle. My levels are all normal now. I also advocate using exercise as this is important in terms of helping your body use insulin more efficiently as well as helping with the depression associated with the physical impact of this condition. Even just walking can increase insulin sensitivity so it doesn't need to be a major commitment to working out. I get off the bus a few stops earlier or park the car farther away from my destination, that way I have to take the extra steps.

Mostly, you need to find what will work for you. Work with your doctor with regards to medications and do some reading about insulin resistance so you can evaluate all the various approaches to the condition. That way you can make informed decisions.

Good luck.
