What is a BBT (basal body temperature) chart?
Many women find it helpful to take their basal body temperature and chart
it during the month to determine when ovulation occurred. Temperatures
should be taken first thing in the morning, before getting out of bed,
drinking anything... pretty much anything. Most keep the thermometer by
the bed, on a nightstand. For more information check the following web
sites: www.fertilityfriend.com or www.tcoyf.com.

How and When do I start a BBT (basal body temperature chart)?
To start, make sure you have a thermometer that gives accurate readings to at least 1 decimal place. Some doctors strongly encourage the use of a BBT thermometer, but other think it's fine to use a digital thermometer that has 1 decimal place. You are looking for a 0.4degree F jump, so if you have one accurate decimal place you should be fine. There is no prescribed time to start taking your BBT. It's helpful to start early in your cycle in order to see the temperature jump that occurs just after ovulation, but to get in the habit, it can be started at any time. Just know that if you've already ovulated, there will be no temp jump and it won't give you much information for that month.

How does one monitor Cervical mucus (CM) or Cervical position (CP)?
CP---Remember the word SHOW--Soft, High, Open, Wet...this is the fertile time. Your cervix is soft, high, open and wet.
To feel the cervix, kneel or squat on the floor and insert your middle finger into your vagina until you feel your cervix. It takes time to get used to it and to know what you are feeling, but this should be done around the same time every day.
CM---you have dry, creamy, lotion like, and wet....in that order in a normal cycle...wet is fertile CM. Some will also refer to EWCM, which is egg-white cervical mucus…this is also considered fertile.

And some helpful links…

What are the correct follicle sizes? What does my doc want to see?
See the attached link… and FYI, CC is clomid (clomiphene citrate). By the way, it’s always appropriate to ask your doctor specifically what he is looking for… This link requires registration and login, but it's got lots of information.
http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/501803

What should my lining thickness be?
Most doctors seem to be looking for a lining thickness of 7-8mm. This does not mean pregnancy cannot be achieved with less, but it is less likely. Ditto the above to ask your doctor.

Are ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) accurate for women with PCOS?
Ovulation predictor kits can be inaccurate for women with PCOS. The OPK detects a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). Women with PCOS have a higher level of LH at all times, therefore sometimes leading to false positives on OPKs. Some women have found them to be accurate though. The other issue is that since many of us don't ovulate regularly, we may not get a positive result and either stop testing before ovulation or spend a small fortune trying to continue testing. If you have a regular cycle, the usual time for testing would be approximately 16days before your period usually starts. If you start testing at that time, you should pick up ovulation.

I got two lines on my OPK, does that mean I'm ovulating?
Most OPKs require that the test line be darker than the reference line to be
a positive result. If the line is lighter, you may want to test again in 4
hours and see if it's darker.

More OPK info
http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/opk.html

I got two lines on my HPT (home pregnancy test), does that mean I'm pregnant?
Provided you read the result within the appropriate time frame, two lines on a HPT is considered a positive test. In this case the test line does not need to be darker than the reference. Just being there is enough. As most here say... a line is a line. Call the doc and ask for b/w to confirm.

What is the earliest I can take a HPT?
This depends on if you took an hcg trigger. The HPT detects hcg in your urine. If you took a trigger shot to induce ovulation, you should wait to test 1 day per 1000IU of the shot you took. The standard dose is 10,000IU, so 10 days after the trigger, it should be out of your system. If you don't know the dose that you took, wait 14 days to be safe. If you test too early it may give you a false positive. If you did not trigger, some tests may detect pregnancy as early as 10dpo. However, since implantation can take place any time from 7dpo to 11dpo, it may be negative on 10dpo, and positive at 14dpo.

For more info on HPTs see the link below (if you want info on which test is best, try Consumer Reports, mentioned in the link below… it requires you to subscribe though but ranks 18 tests…)

What are normal hormone levels?
http://www.fertilityplus.org/faq/hormonelevels.html

What’s with Robitussin?
Robitussin (guaifenesin) (Be sure to get one with guaifenesin as the ONLY active ingredient!!)
Guaifenesin has been promoted as a cervical mucus thinner. The idea is that guaifenesin can thin cervical mucus, and thereby help sperm travel to the egg for fertilization. There is no clinical evidence that guaifenesin can help you get pregnant, or that all women need thinner cervical mucus. If trying this remedy, make sure that the product you purchase does not contain dextromethorphan, as this ingredient may be harmful to a developing fetus.
If trying this remedy, one recommendation is 1-2 teaspoons a day for 5 days prior to ovulation. Personally, I find that I need the dosage listed on the bottle (2 tsp 3X a day).
Keep in mind that Robitussin only thins what you already have so it is very important to drink lots of water to produce mucus so you have something for the Robitussin to thin!

What is good for treating infertility naturally with herbs and vitamins?
Several of the women here have sought the assistance of an acupuncturist or a naturopath. It is strongly recommended that before you start trying to supplement with herbs and anything more than a prenatal vitamin that you seek the guidance of a professional, a person who is experienced with herbs, their interactions, proper dosing, etc. Acupuncture has been shown in a study done in Germany to increase the success rate of IVF. That appears to be the only study to date, but there is lots of anecdotal evidence that it may assist with reproductive health. For help with herbs to consider, see the links below.

www.marilynglenville.com/infertility.htm

What about diet? I’ve heard low carb is the way to go?
Many of the women have found that weightloss has helped restore a more normal cycle. There are tons of resources for this including weight watchers, ediets, books, etc. It does seem that women have had more success with a low carb or diabetic diet. Look into South Beach, Glycemic Impact and such diets. See the links below for more info on diabetic friendly diets.

What medications are ok to take while TTC?
Most docs recommend that you behave as though you are pregnant while you are ttc. This goes for meds too. See the link below for a few meds that are safe.

Worried about a luteal phase defect?
http://www.inciid.org/printpage.php?...tility101&id=7
Red Raspberry:
1,000 mg daily: Start anytime in cycle. Can be taken during pregnancy until a month prior to labor. Strengthens the uterine lining which in turn lengthens luteal phase

I don’t have good quality cervical mucus what can I do?
If you notice little or no cervical mucus around the time of ovulation or notice that what you do have is sticky, crumbly, or creamy, you may have a problem. It is best to speak to your doctor and have him/her perform a post coital test. Remember that often, you don?t see the CM because what really counts is up near the cervix.

Options to increase cervical mucus:
1. Drink lots of water and dont smoke or drink caffiene.
2. Evening Primrose Oil
EPO is said to help the body to produce more fertile quality cervical fluid also known as "egg white cervical mucus? (EWCM). This type of fluid makes it easier for the sperm to get past the cervix and helps it live for longer. Evening Primrose Oil should only be taken from menstruation to ovulation. This is because Evening Primrose can cause uterine contractions in pregnancy and may prevent implantation from occurring.
The dosage taken should be 1500mg to 3000mg per day.
3. Estrogen
Available from your doctor. Estrogen is often prescribed to those using clomid which has a tendency to dry up CM.
4. Grapefruit Juice
It’s rumored that a glass a day will help increase CM (some say you need 3 glasses. You’ll have to research it).
5. Green Tea
Not sure how much to be effective. If anyone knows, please post. The caution here is that there is also some evidence out there that green tea hinders the absorption of folic acid that many of us take to reduce the risk of birth defects.
6. Preseed is a sperm friendly lubricant.
http://www.babyhopes.com/pre-seed.html
7. Royal Jelly
http://www.texasdrone.com/royal_jelly.htm

How high does a P4 (progesterone) have to be to confirm ovulation (also see above link for normal hormone levels)?
"It peaks about seven days after ovulation, when it reaches 15 Ng/ml or more. But note, if you are above 10 in the luteal phase, your progesterone level is probably fine. Additionally, you may get very high progesterone levels after IVF because so many follicles were created. (Progesterone is made by the corpus luteum, which is the site on the ovary from which the egg is released. The more eggs are produced, the more progesterone is produced.) There is no progesterone level that indicates pregnancy, only an hCG level over 5 determines that. It is also worth nothing that progesterone pulses, so the level varies throughout the day. Some doctors suggest testing first thing in the morning after fasting for the most accurate result. A high progesterone level gives more information than a low reading in that a "good" level indicates sufficient progesterone to carry a pregnancy; a lower level (in the 5-15 range) does not spell doom."

What can we expect from the sperm analysis? What do the sperm analysis numbers mean?

What is reasonable exercise to do while TTC?
(From Valstarr, our resident trainer) I went round and round with this to various doctors, and ended up with this:
They do not want you to lift anything more than 20lbs, so you will not rupture any follicles.
They do not want you to be jumping up and down in aerobics class or kickboxing.
They preferr you do not run.
YOU CAN: Walk, even walking briskly is ok. Illiptical machine, and stationary bikes and steppers are fine as well.
YOU CAN: Do weights in moderation.
Swimming is good too!
Yoga is also good, but make sure that in some of the TWISTING postures, you back off a little.
If and when you do elevate your heat rate you DO NOT want to be overheated, can't carry a conversation, or huffing and puffing. Heart rate......do not go anaearobic (over 70-80% Max HR)
A little sweating is good for you, your heart and metabolism.
This is the time to be nice to yourself.............

How do I add a ticker to my signature line?
There are two more commonly used sites for tickers…
www.tickerfactory.com
www.lilypie.com
Go step-by-step through creating your ticker.
In the section that is marked “BBCode”, copy everything from [img] to [/img] and paste it into your signature within your profile.

How do I add the link to my bbt chart?
If you have a chart at fertility friend, go to “Sharing” and “Home Page Setup”. This will give you an http line at the top which can be copied and pasted into your signature line.

Default Time to Take it Seriously

I've been a "lurker" for a while but within the past 2 weeks, I've finally felt that it was time to take this seriously and begin the process so that I hopefully can conceive. I don't know quite where to start-other than going to the doctor-so what should I expect or what steps do I need to take?

Default Posting Photos Faq

First things first.

Your photo's have to be on the web already. Once you have them on the web it's a lot easier but i'm going to start at the beginning.

A free photo host that I personally use is Google's Picasa Web Albums.

To use it you need to download picasa which is a pretty decent photo organizer.

then select the photo's you want online and click publish to web. It will ak you what you want to call the album and such it's very step by step and easy. (You will need to have a google account or create one)

Once they are posted to the web. Go to google click on my account log in and go to picasa web albums. This will bring you to your photo albums that you've posted.

Click on the album and then the photo you would like to share. Right click on the photo and click copy then come over here and click paste in your message box. If you are using picasa web albums as your host it will look like this.

Now the above is entirely the wrong code but the piece you need is inside there. You want to delete everything in front of the second Http and everything after .jpg. So now it looks like this

http://lh3.google.com/Cathleen.Brain...4/P7070593.JPG

Now depending on what your are using for an online photo host getting this piece of information can be easier or harder. When you right click on your photo and copy and paste you may need to select copy shortcut when you do you shouldn't have to alter the string you pasted.

The final step is telling the message board the above is a picture. to do this highlight the picture link then click on the img box to the top of your message.

it should now look like the above.

Thumbs up More Image Help

Just wanted to add something on to this.

As long as the image is online, you can post it. If you don't know the url of the image, you can right-click and go to "properties". In Internet Explorer the part that says "Address (URL)" is what you want to copy. In Mozilla it's the "Location" part that you want to copy.

You can also type the tags in yourself. Your URL just has to be between the tags. It looks something like this (without the spaces by the img parts) -

[ img ] http://www.pcoscommunity.com/images/pcosa.gif [ /img ]

Which displays as this when you remove the spaces -

If you need help, feel free to PM me.

It's working just fine! You used the url tags instead of img so it's displaying as a link instead of a picture. If you want the picture itself to show, just change [url] to [img]!
